Why the Weight?: Dare to be Great!
This is a wonderful and inspiring book for someone trying to lose a few pounds or many pounds. Jean Krueger's story is inspirational and encouraging and has helped me focus on the goals I have set to lose weight and get fit. She gives practical advice that is easy to apply to your daily life and actually works. Her book will make you laugh, think and maybe cry a little but I know that whenever I feel myself slipping or getting careless with my eating choices, I just pick up her book to get inspired all over again. You will love it!!

Jean Is my Role Model
I LOVE THIS BOOK! I thought i couldnt read anything knew from a weightloss book again, untill Jeans book. I have struggled with my weight all my life, but not anymore. Thanks to Jean her advice and book im down 40 lbs. Her book taught me skills for eating well for weightless, weight control, health, and contentment with food. Jean taught me I can still eat what i want but within reason, get my 10,000 steps in everyday, lots of water, and we eat everyday so we need to exercise everyday! Not only is this book awsome and helpful but its allmost like Jean is reading it to you, right next to you. Jean is sincere and has lived through so much in her life and has come so far. She was fat and understands how it is, she is skinny now and telling us how to be also,if she can do it,WE all can do it,so read on...
Love Ya Jean,THANK YOU.

A Feast for the Soul
Filled with inspirational tips and pointers, Why The Weight--Dare to be Great! is a feast for the soul. For anyone who has tried to lose weight (and that includes just about everyone), you will be guaranteed success by reading this book.
From the occasional tip, such as 'Eat asparagus and cantaloupe the day before your weigh-in---they are natural diuretics' to 'Buy a dog--they are exercise machines with hair', you will laugh, be informed and delighted, and inspired to get into action and over to your local weight-loss organization to see those pounds melt off.
As a moderately-successful weight-loss person (I've lost 36 pounds so far), I picked up Jean Krueger's book for a boost. I've been on a plateau lately and was considering going downstairs for a tiny slice of left-over pumpkin pie from Thanksgiving. Those last ten pounds have been eluding me.
After reading Jean's book, I now realize that I've been guilty of the nibble syndrome--eating without recording---and I can easily skip that pie. I am certain that her tips will bring me back to the final weight-loss goal that I've been craving.
This book is for everyone---those beginning their weight-loss journey, those thinking about starting, and the intermediates like myself who haven't quite reached their goals. In addition, it's an inspirational shot in the arm.
Jean uses authors Don Miguel Ruiz, Stephen Covey, Harvey MacKay and Dr. Wayne Dyer, as well as her own stories and advice to uplift. In addition, she is a fountain of knowledge on every food and its qualities.
This book is a must for anyone who wants to be spurred to positive action. It is a workbook in which you ask yourself Universal questions, such as WHO would I like to become? WHERE would I like to go? and similar searching questions which will create the new, goal-directed you. You are given practical instructions to get going on the behavior modification that will lead to success.
It is a book to be read over and over again, to be savored and enjoyed.

A Must Read
Barbara Hammonds packed Truth Or Dare with details that made me feel as if I was in the novel. I could actually feel the room quake as Judge Harlan Van Ell walked into the room to meet with Agent Bryyst.

Great First Novel
Great, real-life characters. Learned a lot. A roller coaster ride of emotions.

An Exciting First Novel
I'm not much of a reader, but I enjoyed Truth Or Dare. Barbara Hammonds' technique makes 415 pages easy and interesting reading. I'm looking forward to her next novel.

Dare to Trust, Dare to Hope Again: Living With Losses of the Heart
Published in Hardcover by Chariot Victor Pub (September, 2001)
Author: Kari West
Average review score:

making sense out of the senseless
Kari West's new book, "Dare to Trust, Dare to Hope Again," is unlike anything I've ever read and truly accomplishes for the reader what the title promises. Her format of relating a personal experience of her own or of some other REAL person in the context of various "life" topics (vulnerability, faith, aloneness, etc) grabs the reader in a very powerful way. You feel she is right there with you, although perhaps a step or two ahead, as she has worked through issues you may be still muddling through. Combined with scripture and a humorous or meaningful quotation, the whole experience of reading this book is very unique, as well as uplifting. For all who have suffered the disappointments of loss, be it divorce, death of a loved one or loss of health, this book is a must!

Help for the Hurting
When life turns into a tornado, leaving us emotionally or physically wrecked, we don't
need pats on the back. What we do need is what Kari West offers in her devotional guide
for those experiencing losses of the heart, "Dare to Trust, Dare to Hope Again." People
reeling from loss have little patience or stamina for lengthy works. But West takes her
readers through twelve weeks of healing through gentle reminders of the Bible's comfort
and encouragement, tips for healthy grieving, and suggestions for "prayer pauses."
Though her personal "tornado" was an unwanted divorce, West includes stories from
people who experienced other types of losses. A helpful resource index in the back of the
book will connect readers with agencies specializing in chronic illnesses, sudden deaths,
death of a child, suicide, and grief support. The title of her last chapter, "God, grant me
courage to plant my hope in You," well summarizes her desire to plant hope among those
who have lost it. If you have experienced loss, this book is one you need to buy for
yourself. If people you love are hurting, giving them this book will communicate your
care and give them the tools to deal Biblically with their loss.

Kari has done it again!
Written with artistry and compassion, Kari writes as someone who has "been there, done that". I enjoyed the format of her new book: a verse of Scripture, then a short essay with lots of real-life illustrations, a brief prayer, and finally a quote from various quotable people. At the end of each section is a place for personal journalling. The format guarantees that we'll keep coming back for refreshment and encouragement. Kari has a unique gift in being able to relate to her readers on a personal level through her writing. She doesn't give glib, pat answers to the difficult questions in life but faces them realistically, offering hope and encouragement to trust again. This book is realistic, meaningful and worth reading (1) for women coping with any kind of loss and (2) for those who want to help others going through a difficult time.

Dare Truth or Promise
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (October, 1999)
Author: Paula Boock
Average review score:

luscious teen lesbian fiction
Paula Boock writes an excellently detailed story of Louie and Willa as they fall in and out of love.

Based in New Zealand, this book captures realistic societal views towards lesbianism. The two girls both experience negativity from society about their sexual orientation; Louie from her family, Willa from her ex-partners family. Yet both find positivity in people that truly love them.

The characters of Louie and Willa are so different, but not so different so they don't suit each other. Each character looks towards the other with great respect, honoring their differences as beautiful and attractive. Their previous experiences with lesbianism are different also, but that doesn't stop them as they fall into a deep romance. Both are overwhelmed by the intensity of the relationship.

Written in a delicate style, yet sometimes punchy with directing what is firm, the story is gripping and powerful. Recommended for anyone who is a teenage lesbian or thinking of becoming one.

Dare Truth or Promise (The Best Book Ever)
I just finished reading this book for the third time and I can't believe how I keep forgetting how amazing this book is. Yes, it is about 2 girls falling i love, but don't let that put you off- it's much better written than most girl-boy romance books, partly of course because it's not exactly a romance as such. What made it even better for me was that it is set in my hometown (Dunedin) and written by someone who I see at the parties I go to with my parents. But I think that even if there was no connection there, I would still love this book. The story is excellent, it keeps you interested and captivated all the way through, the characters are real, and I won't say too much more because this is one of those rare, indescribable books. Just read it for yourself and you'll be so happy you did. It's the second book EVER too make me cry. OK, thats all. Bye :)

YUP!! Very good book indeed
This book is great! It's an easy read, but in a good way. You (or me at least) get into the story right away. And it's really about love. Any kind of love. The important thing here is: Be true to youre deepest feelings, no matter what!! It made me think, and I guess that's the most important thing!!!! ENJOY

I Dare You
Published in Paperback by Kessinger Publishing Company (February, 2003)
Author: William H. Danforth
Average review score:

Don't start this book late at night.
I am sure that Mr. Danforth was a brilliant man. This inspiring book is definately one-of-a-kind, as far as its ability to provoke thought, and make you consider the way in which you face the world each day. I wish I had my own copy of "I Dare You," so I could read it perhaps once a month, jsut to check the progress of my personal growth. One cautionary word of advice, however: Don't start reading this book late at night, especially just before a busy day. While the text is relatively short, the reader finds on one of the opening pages this challenge: "I dare you to finish this book before you go to sleep tonight." Now who could resist

If I could only own one book, it would be this one.
Received it as a prize at H.S. graduation 25 years ago. Mr. Danforth DARED us to pass the book along. I couldn't bear to part with mine. I read it again whenever life gets out of "square". Recommend it as a gift book for those "special occasions" for young people. I have misplaced by bible but I can find this book in seconds! Delighted to know it's still available. READ IT. Even if you are a grownup. I DARE YOU.

Lessons for a life time.
This book was given to me as an achievment award. That was almost 20 years ago. I could not tell you how many time I have read and re-read the pages of this book. Mr. Danforth's message is just as valuable today as it was 20 years ago, actually more because I appricate the things he says so much more today. I have taken his dare to live my life with the ballance he suggest and I am a better person because of it. In my opinnion this book is a classic in motivation and success that ranks right up there among such titles as "Think and Grow Rich", by N. Hill, "How to Win Friends and Influence People", by D. Carnegie, "The Power of Positive Thinking", by N. V. Peal, and "The Geatest Salesman in the World" by O. Mandino. These books will build a foundation that you can build a trmendous life upon if you will read them and take their lessons to heart. Of these books, "I Dare You" is my favorite because of it's simple but effective message. This is truly a message that is just as valuable today as it was the day it was writen. If I could only own one book other than the Bible this would be the one book I would own. This is not a book that should be read once an put on a shelf it should be read over and over and passed around to friends and loved ones.

Dare to Change Your Job and Your Life
Published in Paperback by Jist Works (January, 2000)
Author: Carole Kanchier PhD.

Dare to take back your life
One of the highroads to dissappointment and failure is job dissatisfaction.

I find it interesting that many people are unwilling to change jobs or careers while all the time complaining how bad their company is. Or people who get downsized and go right back in the same type of job.

Carole Kanchier, Ph.d offers a long overdue perspective. She says, "The choice is yours. You can complain or you can change."

Kanchier offers self evaluation. She suggests:

* Redine success. Maintain harmony between who you are and what
you do. Consider that job satisfaction may be more important
than money or position.

* Know yourself and what you want; Identify your mission in life.
Modify goals as you learn more about yourself.
Are you growing or standing still.

* Take career control. Think of building a career rather
than applying for a job. Develop a habit of lifelong
learning and self improvement.

* Enhance creativity. Trust and value intuition. Learn to
relax and have fun.

* Think positively. Learn to say "I can" rather than "I
can't" View setbacks as a learning experience. Listen
to motivational tapes. Reas inspiritional books.
Associate with positive people. Begin and end each
day with positive thoughts.

* Develop resilience: Balance fear of change with committment
Put on the blinders. Get tough. Break goals into small
success steps.

Dare to change your life and your job is a great book that
will help you take back your life and step up to success.

Powerful--A must read for everyone!

Overall a good read and I highly recomend it.

At last!
Well, it was about time, finding a book that answered all my questions about what I really wanted out of life and, but of course, my fears and doubts. I was so trapped in my job, believing every manipulation corporate America put into my head. Now, I know what I want to do, and I am not afraid to risk and lose. Job satisfaction is more important than the money I'll lose, or that I'll make in the future. I just want to be happy. Security? There's no security anywhere, so the only risk I can avoid is the risk of not trying it. You should, too. Just read the book, and see what I mean.

Dangerous Games
Published in Paperback by Signet (June, 1999)
Author: Justine Dare
Average review score:

A well-crafted romantic thriller.
Lake, the Gray Wolf of Dare's WOLF pack, a covert ops group, returns to his home town. Hunting him is one of the villans from DANGEROUS GROUND, but Lake has to face some old demons before he can take care of the new ones. The town of Jewel, CO is holding a grudge for a childhood mistake, and only newcomer, the owner of a local art gallery sees past the outside, with the help of his emotional paintings. This is an intese book, and an edgey thriller, with some very interesting characters. A must-read for suspense fans.

Absolutely awesome and definitely addicting!!
This is the first time I've ever felt it necessary to review a book I've read. Justine Dare has written it so well, that it was totally captivating from the first page to the last. Remember how a soap opera's last scene is made so intense, that you just have to see it the next day to see what happened? This is how Justine's chapters end. I couldn't put the book down until finished reading it. And I will read it again. It was that good :) I graciously thank Amazon for referring it to me.

Complex and riveting
Once again, Justine Dare has taken a tormented hero and given him another chance at love. This book deals with the Gray Wolf of the Wolf Pack -- and his story is completely absorbing. What's really nice too are the heroine's self-reliance and independence, and a sweet love story as a second plot line. You care about these people -- and you understand them completely. It's what I enjoy most about JD's writing.

Searching for Virginia Dare: A Fool's Errand
Published in Hardcover by Coastal Carolina Press (April, 2002)
Author: Marjorie Hudson
Average review score:

stunning
I loved this book! Ms. Hudson used such a creative approach to keep us captivated as she weaves the lessons of her own life with the history of the North Carolina Coast, and one of it's original residents........Virginia Dare.

The ultimate year-round beach read
This book is a real treat. It takes one of the great legends of American history--the Lost Colony--weaves it into the author's memoir-like reflections of her own life and the "missing people" in it, then folds in the author's fictional speculations, beautifully written, about the fate of Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World, who was one of the colonists who disappeared from Roanoke Island in the 17th century. These fictional passages are beautifully written. The book is hard to categorize, with its mix of fiction, nonfiction narrative, and memoir, but that shouldn't stop you from grabbing a copy and reading it over & over.

A New Kind of Story
This book is a treasure. Marjorie Hudson has brilliantly woven history, essay, life and meticulous reporting into a lyrical narrative unlike any I've ever read. We are caught up in not just the mystery of Virginia Dare - which is enough to sustain any work - but in the broader mysteries that Hudson brings to tea - families, the search for truth and the drive to leave behind some evidence that we were here.

Dangerous Ground
Published in Paperback by Signet (August, 1998)
Author: Justine Dare
Average review score:

Dare dares the limits
It has been ten years since Ian Russell died during an overseas covert operation. His group of operatives, The Wolf Pack, immediately disbanded and faded into the woodwork. However, they all agree to answer any requests for help from one another, using the Wall Street Journal as the avenue of communication.

For the past decade, Jess Harper has forgotten his past. However, a cry for help appears in the paper, bringing him out of hiding. He meets with his summoner, Ian's widow Beth, the woman he always has loved who reciprocated his feelings. Apparently her son is missing and Beth feels the lad has been kidnapped. While working together, their old feelings return. Also returning is old enemies who plan to terminate the two lovers.

DANGEROUS GROUND is a well written, exciting romantic suspense. The lead protagonists are a charming couple, who will garner reader empathy and interest and the story line is fast-paced. Justine Dare is a writer that will go very far within the sub-genre.

P>Harriet Klausner

Dark and compelling love on the shelf.
Justine's tale is every mother's nightmare when her son disappears and no one believes he hasn't just run away. The relationship between Beth and Jess seems impossible to make happen. Despite the complexities, Justine manages to pull it together in this brilliant story where noble love is allowed to destroy, then rebuild better and stronger than before.

I loved Beth's superior strength in the face of insurmountable odds. She's the kind of woman we can all respect, a true heroine.

I have only one question that frustrated me. Where was Lake McGregor? "Out of touch for a few weeks" made me want to tear my hair! But I'll be waiting to meet him in the sequel. Sure hope he'll have an answer.

You can't put down Dangerous Ground; it leaves you wanting more, more! -Lee Emory

I just couldn't put this book down.
This was the first time I'd read a Justine Dare book. It certainly won't be my last! It's very rare to find an author who can tell a story, both what is happening in the present, and what happened in the past, that will keep you turning the pages. So often an author will turn back the clock as if the main character(s) is daydreaming about what had happened to bring them to this point. With this book, it is interspersed with the entire story, always bringing a new aspect into what is happening, and what may happen further along, while tieing the entire story line together with perfection. This type of writing made me keep turning the pages well into the wee hours of the morning.

The main storyline is about Beth Russell, the widow of a covert "unofficial" government agent, Ian Russell, who has been dead for 10 years; and Jess Harper, a member of the team code named "Wolf Pack" that Ian Russell had formed and led.

Beth and Ian's son, Jamie, ! has been kidnapped. The police believe he has merely run away, but Beth knows different. After running out of options, she uses the only thing she has left to try and find her son. The 'Wolf Pack' pledge: that if anyone of the team ever needed another, there was a way to get in contact with the remaining three members of the team.

This story is about Beth and Jess. What happened in the past, and what is happening to them while they search for Jamie. It never loses sight of the main characters while the story line builts to it's conclusion.

I highly recommend this story. And hope that Ms. Dare will write a sequel about the one "Lone Wolf" left, Lake McGregor.

Don't You Dare Read This, Mrs Dunphrey
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: Margaret Peterson Haddix
Average review score:

wonderful story of survival
Haddix tells a story that immediately captures the reader's interest. Many of Tish's concerns are "typically" adolescent-- school, job, sexual harassment--as well as one that is not at all typical. Tish's mother has abandoned her and her younger brother Matt. Tish is trying desperately to do the child-rearing that her mother should be doing. When her English teacher assigns a journal, Tish is sure she won't write at all, but once she starts, she finds writing cathartic, especially since Mrs. Dunphrey keeps her word and doesn't actually read anything that the girl tells her not to read. A totally happy ending would be unrealistic, but there is hope that Tish and Matt will have a better life.

A great read that will open your eyes to the hardships of a not so ordinary teenager.

A good quick read
Though this book is small, it's in no way non-entertaining or childish. It tells an amazing story about a girl named Tish. WHen her English teacher assignes her to write a journal, she has no idea how much will happen to her this year, or how much she'll write down of it. But Mrs. Dumphery won't read anything that says "Don't read" on the top. Unfortunatly what Tish really needs is someone to talk about abusive father, her emotionaly distraught mother, and dead grandmother, and her sensitive seven-year-old brother. If you've enjoyed entertaining books such as HATE YOU, and A DOOR NEAR HERE, you'll love this one.

A BOOK TEENAGERS WILL REMEMBER
This is an excellent book for teenagers to read. Not only is it fast reading, but it also deals with family problems and trust. Tish Bonner is a 10th grader who is abandoned by her parents and is left to raise her little brother, Matt. Her english teacher, Mrs. Dunphrey, has everyone in her class write a daily journal. The teacher told the students to write "Do not read this" on the entries they didn't want her to read. On her private "Do not read this" pages, Tish takes a lot of risks and talks about her many problems trying to earn money and raise her brother. When Tish asks Mrs. Dunphrey to read her private journals at the end of the school year, it is Tish's way of reaching out for help, which Mrs. Dunphrey gladly gives her. I liked reading this book because Tish never gave up, even when things were awful. It also helps the reader realize that we can't do everything by ourselves and sometimes we need to depend on others to help us out.
